Shaking Off the Rust

It only takes me a couple of days to lose the edge on my technique. This time of year, with holiday travel and family events, my practice and performance routine tends to get disrupted on a regular basis. I try to steal 20 minutes or an hour here and there, but, more often than not, it doesn’t happen. Thankfully, it only takes a short time for things to return to normal. But, I’ll probably never get used to that feeling of picking up my bass after a few days off and and getting the sensation, from the bass and from me, that we have developed a little distance between us in some way. I call it the “Who The Hell Are You?!?!” moment.

As the instrument and I get reacquainted, I love to hear the bass wake up and start to sing. After an hour or so, we’re usually back in synch.
